    J Street Welcomes Mike Balaban to Development Team

    The J Street Companies welcomes Washington, DC commercial real estate industry veteran Mike Balaban to its development team, where he will hold the position of Development Executive and be responsible for generating, underwriting, and managing new ground up and value add development opportunities for J Street.
    Balaban has an extensive track record of creating real estate value through entitlement and excellence in development design. His background includes experience in adaptive re-use and historic redevelopment as well as ground-up development. Most recently, with msb Urban LLC and SB Urban, Balaban focused on the development of the Urban Suites concept and micro-housing developments. Previously, Balaban headed Lowe Enterprises’ non-hospitality east coast activities, establishing and growing the LA-based developer into a major player in the downtown Washington, DC market. Prior to Lowe Enterprises, Balaban was with Washington Real Estate Investment Trust (now Washington REIT).

    He has been responsible for the acquisition, development and management of over $1.5 billion of mixed-use projects in the Washington, DC region, including the repositioning and redevelopment of the Fairmont Building and the Air Rights Center in Bethesda, MD, Chevy Chase Pavilion in Chevy Chase, MD and Ballston Metro Center. Balaban oversaw the development of City Vista through 2008, a visionary and complex mixed-use project in Mount Vernon Triangle. Recent development project planning and entitlement work includes Blagden Alley and the Latham Hotel.

    Balaban is an Advisory Board member of ULI Washington and a Board Member of the George Washington University Center for Urban Real Estate Analytics. He is an alumnus of Kenyon College, with a Masters of Architecture from the Harvard University Graduate School of Design and an MBA from Wharton.
